CAS welcomes government action on Council Tax Benefit

Citizens Advice Scotland have welcomed the government’s announcement of extra support for people affected by cuts to Council Tax Benefit.

CAS spokesman Keith Dryburgh says,

“We have been pointing out for some time that the UK government’s welfare changes are set to have a hugely damaging effect on hundreds of thousands of low-income households in Scotland. Anything that can be done to mitigate that is of course welcome, and we commend both the Scottish government and CoSLA for heeding the warnings that we and others have been making about this.

“It’s important to note however that the cut to Council Tax benefit is only one of a long list of very damaging changes being made to the benefits system – many of which are set to hit those who are already struggling the most.

“So we hope that this initiative will be the first of many, and we are keen as ever to talk to the government, Local Authorities and others about how to cushion the impact these changes will have on the vulnerable people of Scotland.”
